Artist's Statement

Not having the words to express my feelings is what brought me back to painting. These paintings are images of my journey—moving through spaces of presence as well as a dream-like existence, a feeling of departure.

In my desire to stay by my lover's side, I exist—one foot in this world and one in the other. His children, so much like him, are here with me, traveling through their own emotions, their own feelings of loss, and their own memories of their father.

The paintbrush acts as a bridge between his world and mine. When I paint, my heart feels intact. What seems to be happening is a kind of healing—a healing of the brain, a release from fear, from the pain of loss. The process feels excruciating, yet it also seems to be the way forward… further into love.

The way forward is with a broken heart, for a broken heart is the one that truly knows it has loved. In this knowledge, in the movement of my paintbrush, in the color and texture of the paint, I find my only solace.
